What is MG Pilot and How Does it Work?

MG Pilot is the collective name for MG's safety technology features.

Every MG model is fitted with an extensive range of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), which has gone a long way to winning a full five-star Euro NCAP Safety Rating for the MG4 EV, the MG ZS EV and the MG HS. The MG5 EV hasn't yet been safety tested by Euro NCAP but it does have MG Pilot safety features.

How many different safety features make up MG Pilot?

There are ten safety features that make up MG Pilot. They are specifically designed to protect the driver, passengers, pedestrians and other road users. They include a number of semi-autonomous driving and safety systems that make driving as pleasurable as possible..

Adaptive Cruise Control

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) uses sensors built into your MG to detect the vehicle in front of you on the road. It will change your speed automatically depending on the current situation. If your ACC is set to a certain speed for motorway cruising and the car in front begins to slow down, the system will use the brakes to gently slow your car down to match a similar speed to the car in front.

Intelligent High Beam Control

Constantly fiddling around with your high beam settings when travelling down a narrow country lane at night can be a big distraction. It takes your focus off the road when your reactions need to be at their sharpest.

Switch your headlights to 'Auto' and the Intelligent High Beam Control will adjust your high beam settings down to low beam when it detects an oncoming car. This means that you can keep full concentration on the road ahead and the driver of the oncoming car won't be dazzled by your headlights.

Active Emergency Braking with Pedestrian and Bicycle Detection

Active Emergency Braking is a smart technology that reacts faster than a human can. When travelling at speeds above 20 km/h (12.4mph), the automatic braking system will slow the car down to reduce the severity of any incident.

When travelling below that speed, the car will come to a complete stop when a possible collision is detected .

Traffic Jam Assist

A driver's concentration can easily be lost when backed up in a lengthy traffic jam. You may be idling along with one eye on the infotainment touchscreen, deciding which radio station to switch to.

The Traffic Jam Assist technology can bring your MG to a complete stop and then accelerate again by monitoring the car in front and automatically replicating its movement .

Lane Departure Warning System

Using a camera built into your MG, the vehicle can detect the road markings ahead and predict when the driver may be departing them inadvertently. The Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) sends a warning to the driver that they can both see and hear to alert that they need to correct the steady course of the car.

Lane Keep Assist

The Lane Keep Assist (LKA) feature goes one step further than the LDWS. The LKA will automatically correct the line of the car if it detects that it is leaving the lane and a collision with another vehicle may be a possibility. The driver will feel a notable change in the steering that automatically pulls the car back into the centre of the lane.

Blind Spot Detection

A car travelling in your blind spot is a natural hazard. The Blind Spot Detection (BSD) acts as an extra pair of eyes. It alerts you when a vehicle is approaching your blind spot on both the right and left sides of the car with a visible signal on the door mirror.

Lane Change Assist

Changing lanes requires that extra bit of concentration, especially on a busy motorway. The Lane Change Assist works in addition to the BSD. It provides another visible signal alongside the BSD to alert you when the next lane is safe to move into.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert

Reversing out of a tight parking spot can be a tricky task even for the most experienced driver. You need to keep an eye on three or four different places around the car at the same time.

The Rear Cross Traffic Alert comes in handy as it alerts you when another car is approaching from both sides so that you can make reversing safer for all road users.

Intelligent Speed Limit Assist

The Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA) feature gives you that extra peace of mind that you are alerted whenever the speed limit of a road is about to change. ISLA uses a built-in camera to detect speed limit signs by the sides of the road and warns the driver whether to slow down or even to speed up. It ensures that you're always travelling at a safe speed for yourself and those around you.
