Is the cost of driving affecting you?

It has been reported that around a third of young drivers have put off getting repairs and maintenance checks on their cars carried out in reaction to the increasing cost of motoring.

The RAC's Report on Motoring 2022 has shown worryingly that 37% of under-25s have delayed having repairs being carried out on their vehicle to reduce their monthly outgoings.

Even more alarmingly, 16% of the same 17-24 age range have put off having major repairs being completed on their car.

The top concern for UK drivers for 2022 in the RAC Report is the price of fuel. 55% of the 3,102 people surveyed identified this as the main issue around motoring - jumping up massively from just 25% in 2021.

This, in turn, explains why motorists, and especially younger ones who are more likely to have older vehicles and less cash, are attempting to cut costs in other areas. However, RAC spokesperson Rod Dennis explained that this situation is “bad news for everyone”.

He reasoned: “Putting off vehicle repairs or skipping routine services are both false economies. Not getting work to a car done means the chances of it letting a driver down shoots up, making it potentially less safe.”

The other four in the Top 5 of motorists' concerns were made up of maintenance of local roads, poor standards of driving from other motorists, drivers using handheld mobile phones, and the behaviour of cyclists.

Service and MOT

An annual service on your car is required by law and failure to have them carried out may result in a substantial fine. A service is a comprehensive test on all aspects of your car to ensure its roadworthiness. They include the clutch, gearbox, coolant system, air filter, front and rear wipers, locks, battery, seatbelts, and suspension.

An MOT test is different to an annual service but is also a legal requirement. You need to have an MOT booked every 12 months after your car has been on the road for more than three years. Around 20 aspects of your car are checked during its MOT, such as brakes, tyre tread, lights, exhaust, and mirrors.

There are also smaller checks you can carry out at home to keep your car in good condition, especially now we're heading towards harsher driving conditions as winter approaches.
