The legal minimum for tread on tyres is 1.6mm* in depth, but it is recommended that tyres are changed when they reach a tread depth of 3mm. It is estimated that 10% of all road users drive with at least one illegal tyre.
If your current tyres fall below this then you are driving your car illegally and are at risk of prosecution. To check your current tread use the wear indicator across each tyre or call into your local Chapelhouse site for your tyres to be checked for you.
Tyre Tread Depth
Maximum Tyre Tread: 8mm // Minimum Legal Limit: 1.6mm* // Recommended Minimum Tread: 3mm - * Centre 75% of the breadth and around entire circumference.
Having your tyres at the incorrect tyre pressures can affect both the economy and safety of your car. Under inflated tyres contribute to accidents as the braking distances and steering is affected especially when cornering. A staggering 90% of all cars on the road have incorrect pressure in the tyres.
Penalties For Illegal Tyres - For each illegal tyre that you have can lead to three penalty points on your licence and a maximum fine of £2,500.
