Is the price of an MOT test set to rise?
17/10/25
The price of an MOT test could soon be set to rise following a campaign by UK garages, with government ministers reviewing the cost of the annual evaluation of your vehicle's roadworthiness, reports Auto Express.
It would be the first time in 15 years that the MOT test has increased in cost, with the current price limit of £54.85 being set back in 2010. The government's transport department is set for talks with the Independent Garage Association (IGA) to discuss a possible change in cost.

The IGA says that the price increase ultimately comes down to escalating costs facing your local car garage, including a rise in employer National Insurance contributions, energy costs, and the upskilling of vehicle technicians to work on a higher percentage of pure electric drivetrains.
“We understand the financial pressures faced by drivers and the industry surrounding them, including MOT centres, which is why we keep MOT fees constantly under review, working closely with industry to listen to their concerns,” a Department of Transport spokesperson told Auto Express.

What is an MOT test?
An MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is a mandatory annual test of wear and tear accrued on your car. Introduced in 1960, the MOT test involves dozens of checks on your vehicle, including the brakes, lights, fuel system, doors, wipers, windscreen, lights, mirrors, exhaust and tyres. The test will not cover your engine, clutch or gearbox.
An MOT test is not the same as your annual service and no repair works will be carried out, but you could be given recommendations to correct any failures.
