Suzuki Company

Manufacturer History Suzuki Cars

1909

Suzuki was founded in 1909 as a silk textile manufacturer, the Suzuki Loom Works. Founded by Michio Suzuki, Suzuki loom manufacturing continued for nearly 30 years.

The 1930s

The company moved to making cars in Japan, developing its first motor vehicle prototype in 1937. Due to WW1, cars became a luxury and during the war, Suzuki went back to producing looms.

The 1950s

Over time, the company evolved, going on to design and manufacture its first motorcycle and car in 1955. Rather than copying American, 6-cylinder prototypes, Suzuki opted for creating its own model, a stroke four-cylinder engine with 14 horsepower.

During the 50s, Suzuki released several models with the SF Pick-up being the most successful.

The 1960s

Due to its success, Suzuki was able to continue producing models throughout the 60s. Models included the Suzulight Van, the TL and the small Suzuki Fronte 360.

The 1970s

The 70s saw the introduction of the famous Jimny which had several engine options and chassis variations.

The 1980s

Suzuki starts journeying across the ocean in the 80s with the help of a business agreement with GM in 1981. This gave them a niche in the western market.

The Suzuki Swift, Suzuki's fun to drive, small car and the Suzuki Vitara, Suzuki's small SUV were introduced in the late 80s.

Suzuki hit 10 million units of production around the same time.

The 1990s

By the 90s Suzuki had expanded worldwide and had introduced several new 4x4 models.

Today

Fast forward to today and Suzuki is one of the TOP 10 manufacturers in the world. Suzuki now has a decade of expertise behind it. It has made its name in the electric space with its mild-hybrid technology, full-hybrid and all-electric cars.
