MG4 EV named ‘Small Electric Car of the Year’ 2024

The MG4 EV has retained its crown as the 'Small Electric Car of the Year' winner at the 2024 What Car? Awards. 

It's the second time in successive years that the affordable electric hatchback has won this award, adding to over 30 major motoring awards the MG4 EV has collected since its launch in 2022.

Its high-performance model, the MG4 EV XPOWER, was also named the 'Best Electric Hot Hatch'. Using the Launch Control feature, the XPOWER can sprint from 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds - faster than many of its more established and more expensive electric rivals. 

The MG4 XPOWER's 64kWh and dual motor can produce 429 BHP (435 PS) and boasts a brand-new all-wheel drive system.

The MG4 EV was recognised by the What Car? team for its outstanding value for money and highly competitive electric range. 

The MG4 SE Long Range has a 281-mile range, while the Trophy Extended Range version can travel up to 323 miles from a single charge! Adding to its overall practicality, the MG4 EV can be charged in as little as 35 minutes.  

What Car? editor Steve Huntingford heaped praise on the award-winning EV for its value for money. “The MG4 EV is very well priced, yet this hasn't been achieved by cutting corners,” he said. “Instead, it's a practical electric family car with a good range and neat handling that just happens to be great value. All things considered, we reckon it's one of the best cars to ever wear the MG badge.” 

UK drivers tend to agree - over 20,000 units of the MG4 EV were sold in 2023, making it the second-best selling electric car of the year.

David Allison, MG Head of Product and Planning, added: “It's a fantastic achievement for the MG4 EV to have been recognised by What Car? again. During 2023, the MG4 EV range delivered even more choice for customers, with models like the Extended Range, offering families great practicality and over 300 miles of driving on a single charge.”

The MG4 wasn't the only MG EV to be recognised at the What Car? Awards. The MG5 EV was named the 'Best Electric Estate' and the MG ZS EV collected the prize for 'Best Small Electric SUV for Value'. Both awards were also retained from last year! 

“It's easy to see why the MG5 is an enticing proposition for buyers, because it offers a huge amount of practicality for the same price as a small electric hatchback,” the What Car? team evaluated. “The MG5's official 250-mile range will be more than enough for most people's needs.”

They also said of the MG ZS EV: “It undercuts all of its key rivals by thousands of pounds, yet it's packed with kit; highlights include keyless entry, adaptive cruise control, air conditioning, and a 10.1-inch infotainment system with built-in Sat Nav and smartphone mirroring.” 

All new MG cars, including electric, petrol and plug-in hybrid, come with 7-year/80,000-miles warranty as standard.
