Gimme five! Kia’s quintuple of wins at News UK Motor Awards

Kia has made history by claiming an unprecedented five awards at the News UK Motor Awards 2022.

The all-new Niro and the Sportage SUV picked up two awards each, while the Kia brand itself was named the highly prestigious 'Manufacturer of the Year'.

The all-new Kia Niro was named 'Small Crossover/SUV of the Year', as well as 'Car of the Year'.

These prizes come hot on the heels of the Niro scooping a hat-trick of accolades at the recent Carbuyer Awards, including being named Carbuyer's 'Car of the Year' for 2023.

Rob Gill, Motors Editor from News UK, commented: “Let's be clear. Winning Car of the Year is serious business. It has to be exceptional. It has to be the car that really does everything for everybody.”

The all-new Niro was launched in summer of 2022 with three different electrified powertrains available - self-charging hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and for the first time, fully electric (EV).

There really is something for everyone wishing to make the switch to electric driving.

Kia Niro HEV

The Niro HEV uses regenerative braking to power its 32kW electric motor that allows for smoother acceleration, lower emissions and  greater fuel economy.

Kia Niro PHEV

The Niro PHEV does have a petrol engine but has the option of up to 40 miles of electric-only driving thanks to its 62kW e-motor - ideal for a short commute and the school run.

Kia Niro EV

The Kia Niro EV is fully electric and has zero emissions. With a driving range of up to 285 miles from a single charge, it is great for longer journeys.

Gill continued: “We thought the old Niro was good, but this new one is next level. Swanky interior, tech-rich, luxurious, comfy, big drink holders, buttons to warm and soothe your back, hugely satisfying. But you are not being punished for it by paying a premium price.

“Niro punches way ahead of the rest, and for that reason, it is the perfect choice as 2022 Car of the Year, as well as our Small SUV/Crossover of the Year.”

The Sportage wasn't to be outdone, also winning 'Best Family Car' and the 'Reader's Choice' award, as voted for by the readers of several News UK media titles, including The Sunday Times and Driving.co.uk

These wins for the Sportage demonstrate its standing as a well-loved SUV for its overall practicality, stylish design, and compatibility when faced with tricky terrain.

The Sportage's Terrain Mode aids traction, stability, and control on uneven surfaces, bolstering its credentials as the ultimate utility vehicle.

Gill added: “Kia has thought of everything and everyone. Further proof that Kia is absolutely killing it right now is that the Sportage, the heartland do-it-all SUV, was crowned Family Car of the Year, as well as being voted as Readers' Car of the Year.”

Paul Philpott, President and CEO of Kia UK Limited, said: “To be named Manufacturer of the Year alone would have been an achievement in which we could take great pride, but to make history as the first manufacturer to win five accolades at these prestigious awards is an incredible honour.

“The all-new Niro and Sportage have proven themselves to be hugely popular among UK buyers since their respective launches earlier this year and are both among the top ten UK best-sellers so far this year.”

The all-new Niro and Sportage families have indeed sold well over 20,000 units each in 2022 to date. Discover for yourself why they are so popular today at Chapelhouse Kia!
