What are the safest cars on sale at Chapelhouse?

When it comes to buying a new car, one of the top priorities for car buyers is almost always safety, especially for those with families. They need to be confident of how safe the car is going to be when it's out on the open road and what safety features are included as standard.

What is Euro NCAP?

The European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) tests the safety of cars on sale across Europe, and the Euro NCAP safety rating is an easy guide for buyers and businesses to look at when comparing which car is most suited to their needs.

Their five-star rating system says how safe a car is, after undergoing its rigorous testing programme that includes a series of crash tests on all sides of the car. Put simply, the more stars, the safer the car is guaranteed to be.

Euro NCAP states that a car with a five-star rating will have “overall excellent performance in crash protection and well equipped with comprehensive and robust crash avoidance technology.”

However not all new cars are tested by Euro NCAP. It must be noted too that cars with lower star ratings aren't necessarily deemed unsafe. They just don't meet the exceptionally high standards set by the cars with four and five stars. A two-star car is described as “nominal crash protection but lacking crash avoidance technology”.

What is tested by Euro NCAP?

The testing programme is split into four different categories:

  • Adult Occupant - how well will adults be protected in the event of a crash.
  • Child Occupant - how well children will be protected in the event of a crash.
  • Vulnerable Road Users - the conditions pedestrians and cyclists will face if hit by the car.
  • Safety Assist - judging the quality of proactive and reactive safety features on the car.

Each of these four are given an individual score, which then determines how many stars the car will score overall.

The Kia Sportage was given a full five stars by Euro NCAP last year following its relaunch in the summer. It was named 'Best Family SUV' at the recent What Car? Awards.

The Sportage is jam packed with Kia's latest safety and parking technology, known as DriveWise. The Highway Driving Assist feature keeps you safe on the motorway by automatically changing your speed based on where other cars are positioned ahead of you on the road.

When changing lanes, the Blind-Spot View Monitor projects actual live footage of the rear-view in your instrument cluster, thanks to cameras built into each door mirror. Terrain Mode, with three different settings, offers greater traction and control when driving on uneven roads and in icy conditions.

The Sportage was Kia's best-selling car last year and now comes with Plug-in Hybrid, Full Hybrid, Mild Hybrid, petrol, and diesel powertrains.

All new Kia models are covered by its industry-leading 7-year/100,000 mile warranty plan. Click here to find out more.

The MG4 EV launched back in September 2022 and was granted its five-star safety rating in December. It has been very popular with those making the switch to fully electric driving, and motoring industry experts alike.

The striking hot hatch has already been awarded three overall 'Car of the Year' titles, along with a whole host of other awards, including the What Car? 'Best Small Electric Car' for 2023. The MG4 is comes complete with MG Pilot, which is MG's package of smart safety features.

The MG4 scored highly in the Vulnerable Road Users category. The Active Emergency Braking with Pedestrian and Bicycle Detection system is a smart technology that can react faster than humans. When driving at speeds greater than 20km/h, the automatic braking will kick in and reduce the severity of any collision. At speeds below 20km/h, these collisions will be avoided altogether, ensuring pedestrians are protected.

The MG4 EV has a maximum driving range of over 360 miles from a single charge and looks awesome in Volcano Orange.

All new MG cars are covered by its comprehensive 7 year warranty plan. You can find out more here.

The Sorento SUV is Kia's largest model on the market. Coming with seven seats and a massive boot load, it is an ideal family car.

Some drivers can find parking and reversing particularly tricky in a city car, not to mention when driving a vehicle that's the size of the Sorento.

This is where the rear-view camera, parking sensors and 360° Around View Monitor come in very handy. These work in combination to ensure that no obstacles get in your way. Keep an eye on your whole surroundings in 3D via the 10.25” high-definition LCD infotainment touchscreen.

The Kia Sorento is now available as a Full Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid to maximise your fuel economy and minimise its impact on the environment.

The EV6 GT is by far Kia's powerful car, electric or otherwise. The car has 577bhp thanks to its dual electric motor and can power from 0-62mph in just 3.5 seconds.

But with great power comes great responsibility. The Navigation-Based Smart Cruise Control makes for safe and easy cornering when cruising at speed. Before entering a bend or curve in the road, the EV6 GT will slow down to a safer speed based on information from the Navigation system. When coming out of the bend, the car will return to its pre-set speed.

The Kia EV6 GT can travel up to 263 miles from a single charge, which is impressive from an electric vehicle of its stature. Ultra-quick rapid charging times will have you back on the road in no time. Charging the EV6 from 10-80% can be done in just 18 minutes.

The MG HS is the family-friendly large SUV that puts safety at its core. Its five-star rating was awarded back in 2019, but is still just as safe today as it was then.

The MG Pilot is MG's Advanced Driver Assistance System, and the HS features many of the same safety tools that are included on the MG4.

This includes Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning. You'll be alerted if the car appears to be veering towards the edge of the lane. If the system suspects a possible collision, it will take control of the steering and move you back into the centre of the lane.
